Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge
"Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge's origins go back to the mid-1960s when two pioneering companies were formed in Nepal, just dipping its toe into the swirling waters of tourism. These were Tiger Tops - the first wildlife safari operator - and Mountain Travel Nepal - the first trek company and pioneer of Himalayan Trekking - hence our name: Tiger Mountain. Fast forward to the late seventies when Col. Jimmy Roberts, founder of Mountain Travel Nepal was approached by the then Prince of Wales, Colonel in Chief of 2nd Goorkhas, asking him to arrange a trek so he might learn more about his soldiers' homeland. A trek was designed to meet the requirements of both the Prince and the Nepal Government and this ran along a ridge on the eastern side of the Pokhara Valley. Shortly after his trek, HRH the Prince of Wales proposed to Lady Diana Spenser and the rest is history. It was rumoured that he took the decision while trekking in Nepal. The resultant stories had many travellers eager to retrace the Royal Trek as it had become known. So much so that it was necessary to run the route both as originally walked and in reverse in order to accommodate the demand. Land was rented where the prince had paused on his first day out from Pokhara which offered magnificent views from Dhaulagiri to Manaslu (three 8000m peaks) and this was used for the final night of the reverse Royal Trek. From a rented campsite to buying the land and building a permanent lodge took some time. However, 2nd October 1998, Sir Edmund Hillary KG, hero of the 1953 Everest Expedition, kindly agreed to Col. Jimmy's request to open the lodge. Now approaching its 25th anniversary, the lodge has become a champion of regenerative tourism, in Nepal."
