Explore the Beauty of Rural India on a Village Tour

While staying at The Untamed Wilderness Camp, Bandhavgarh, take time to step outside the forest and walk into a nearby village. This guided experience lets you see how people live in rural India – simply, closely tied to their surroundings and in sync with nature.

Your walk begins with a trail that winds through fields and muddy paths, where everyday scenes unfold before you, like women drawing water, children playing and elders sitting in the shade exchanging stories.

You’ll pass homes built with local materials and painted in earthy tones. The houses are modest, but there’s something grounding about their quiet strength and the calm that surrounds them.

Farming is the main way of life here, and you’ll get a chance to see traditional techniques still in use – oxen-led ploughing, hand-harvesting and how the changing seasons shape the work and meals of each household.

Your guide helps you understand local customs, explaining the small shrines, the plants used for medicine or why a certain tree is never cut down. As you walk, you’ll hear stories about the wildlife of the area, not just as something to admire but as something the people have learned to live alongside.

You’ll see how they’ve built a sense of balance, keeping livestock safe, storing food well and understanding when to stay clear of the forest.

What stays with you, though, is the warmth.

Villagers greet you with genuine curiosity and kindness. They might offer you a cup of chai, invite you to sit or ask about where you come from. There’s no rush, just honest interaction and shared time.

Spot over 250 Species of Birds in the Wild

In Bandhavgarh, a simple walk lets you enjoy the landscape at a pace that encourages quiet observation. As you move through fields, ponds and streams, you begin to notice how alive the surroundings are.

The stillness is often broken by a sudden call of a bird, a movement in the bushes or a quick flash of colour in the trees.

You might see a crested serpent eagle sitting quietly, watching the ground below or a shaheen falcon soaring overhead. With some patience, you could spot bonnelli’s eagle or the graceful hen harrier gliding low over open fields.

It’s not just the big birds that catch your eye – there are smaller species everywhere, each with its own behavior and charm.

Birding here is not rushed. You stop often, scan the branches, listen for calls and wait. Your guide helps you identify what you see and hear, but the experience itself is what stays with you, encouraging you to pay attention to the details you might usually overlook.

It’s also a chance to learn. You understand which birds prefer which habitats, how some migrate over long distances and how others stay close to their chosen spot all year round. Some feed by the water and others stick to open grasslands or dense forest patches.

Spending time this way feels different from other activities. Even if you don’t consider yourself a birder, the act of watching and waiting in a place like Bandhavgarh is calming and fun. It's all about noticing what's often missed and letting the forest reveal itself.

  • “The building would have been enough. What we did not expect was how much of the day the staff quietly built around what we said at breakfast.”
