Glide through a Mangrove Forest on the Madu Ganga Boat Ride

Glide through a Mangrove Forest on the Madu Ganga Boat Ride

A boat ride on the Madu Ganga is one of the most peaceful and rewarding experiences you can have in the Bentota area. Just a short drive from Lunuganga, this shallow lake system, Sri Lanka’s second largest wetland, spans 915 hectares and is surrounded by thick mangrove forests.

These mangroves don’t just look impressive; they play an important role in the ecosystem by protecting the coastline and slowing down rising waters. They also help fight climate change by storing carbon in their dense, waterlogged soil.

As your boat glides across the calm water, you’ll feel a soft breeze on your face, hear the gentle splash of oars and see the sunlight dancing on the surface. It’s quiet but not silent; you’ll hear birds calling from the trees and maybe even the splash of a water monitor diving into the water.

The ride is smooth and soothing, perfect for switching off and letting your mind wander. You’ll pass through narrow channels shaded by mangroves and wide open stretches where the sky meets the water.

Keep your eyes open for monkeys swinging through the trees, giant squirrels and a variety of birds. If you’re lucky, you might spot a crocodile resting on the muddy banks, though sightings are rare. Over 300 plant species and 200 types of vertebrate animals live in this area, making every ride slightly different.

The trip lasts about two hours and is best done early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the air is cooler and wildlife is more active.

More than just a sightseeing trip, the Madu Ganga boat ride offers a slow, thoughtful way to connect with nature.

    Enjoy Sri Lanka’s Traditional Puppetry

A visit to Ambalangoda gives you a chance to experience traditional puppetry, a unique side of Sri Lankan culture that’s often overlooked. This small coastal town, known for its offbeat arts and crafts, has a long history of storytelling through puppets.

Though the tradition has become rare over time, it still survives in small pockets, keeping alive a form of theatre that once brought entire communities together.

Just a short drive from Lunuganga, you’ll start your experience at a puppet art museum, where you’ll get an introduction to Sri Lanka’s puppetry tradition, which dates back to the 12th century.

Here, you’ll see handcrafted wooden puppets, some colourful and comical, others worn and weathered with time. You’ll learn how these puppets were used not just for entertainment, but also to share news, pass on values and make social commentary.

The puppeteer himself will walk you through this journey. He’ll introduce you to well-known puppet characters and share stories, including tales from his great-grandfather’s performances in villages during the days of old Sri Lanka.

These personal stories add a layer of meaning to the experience and show how deeply connected puppetry is to Sri Lankan heritage.

You’ll then sit down to enjoy a three-act puppet show, performed to the rhythm of folk music. The show is lively, fun and surprisingly expressive.

With meaningful storytelling, handmade props and the puppeteer’s skillful movements, you’ll see how this simple art form can still hold an audience today.

This outing is perfect for families, art lovers or anyone curious about local traditions. Watching a puppet show here is like a window into the past, where stories bring people together.
