Enjoy Wild Encounters on an Elephant Safari

From July to October, as the dry season settles in, Minneriya National Park becomes the stage for one of Sri Lanka’s most remarkable wildlife events: The Gathering. During these months, hundreds of wild elephants, sometimes over 400, emerge from nearby forests and gather around the park’s reservoir in search of water and fresh grass.

You’ll see entire herds moving together – playful calves sticking close to their mothers, young males sizing each other up and older matriarchs leading their groups with calm authority.

Watching these elephants in their natural habitat gives you rare insight into their social lives, movement patterns and unspoken communication.

For the rest of the year, depending on rainfall and food availability, the herds shift to Kaudulla National Park or Hurulu Eco-Park. Your safari route will be decided based on real-time information from local wildlife authorities to ensure the best possible sightings.

The experience is private and respectful – no crowds, no noise, just you quietly watching from a distance as the elephants go about their day.

The safari includes a private vehicle and a knowledgeable driver who also tracks animal movement. You’ll need to wear neutral colours to blend in with the environment, along with comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate gear.

Carry water and a light jacket if needed. You’re expected to follow a few simple rules like no feeding or touching the animals, no getting out of the vehicle unless advised and absolutely no littering.

This isn’t just a wildlife outing but a great chance to witness something truly meaningful and see why these protected spaces are worth preserving.

Each safari is different because the elephants decide where to be – your job is to show up, stay patient and enjoy the experience.

Try Deep Sea Fishing in Sri Lankan Waters

Try Deep Sea Fishing in Sri Lankan Waters

Depending on sea conditions and your level of experience, you could be fishing for tuna, marlin, barracuda, giant trevally, wahoo or mahi-mahi. You’ll be guided by an experienced local crew who know these waters well.

They’ll take you through the basics, help with technique and share some of the traditions and stories tied to deep sea fishing in this part of the world.

It’s not just about what you catch – it’s about being out on the water, watching the horizon and feeling the rhythm of the sea.

Your fishing vessel is fully equipped, so there’s no need to bring your own gear. Everything you need – rods, reels, bait and tackle – is provided. The trip also includes light refreshments to keep you comfortable while you’re out at sea.

What you’ll want to bring with you are the basics like swimwear, sunscreen, a towel and a waterproof bag or pouch to keep your phone or valuables safe from the salt and spray.

There’s no guarantee of what you’ll reel in but the experience itself is the reward – being out in open water, waiting quietly, then suddenly feeling the pull on your line. Whether you land a big catch or not, the focus is on the process, the patience and the time spent doing something real.

It’s a few hours off the coast, away from screens and crowds, just you and the ocean. If you're looking for something active, peaceful and a little unpredictable, this is a good way to spend your morning or afternoon.

The light in the morning is perfect for clicking photos. This is one of those experiences that stays with you – peaceful, wild and full of surprises.
