In the early 1990s the marine environment was under increasing pressure from overexploitation and destructive fishing practices. Dynamite fishing was a widespread practice, mostly driven by a lack of awareness and understanding of the huge importance of healthy coral reefs for marine biodiversity, coastal protection, fisheries and food security as well as tourism.
To address this, a German aid worker and conservation activist, Sibylle Riedmiller, proposed to the Zanzibar government to establish an “Educational Marine Park” as a private social investment, based around three core pillars:
• CONSERVATION — Legal gazettment of the Chumbe Marine Protected Area (MPA), including a reef sanctuary and forest reserve.
• EDUCATION — Development of an environmental education programme to support raising awareness about marine conservation and sustainable management, for fishers, school children, teachers, community members and government officials.
• ECOTOURISM — Establishment of a state-of-the-art island ecolodge to generate financing to
pay for all conservation management and education services.
Chumbe Island was identified as an appropriate site due to its still intact reef system, uninhabited status, and dense pristine but threatened coral-rag forest with rare species. At the time, Zanzibar and Tanzania did not yet have MPAs and no policy for such an initiative. Therefore, Ms. Riedmiller created Chumbe Island Coral Park (CHICOP) Ltd, a not-for-profit company set up for the sole purpose of establishing and sustainably managing the MPA. CHICOPs operational vision is that “the Chumbe Island Coral Reef Sanctuary and Closed Forest Reserve are effectively and sustainably managed in order to maximize their contribution to biodiversity conservation, serve as a model for effective ecotourism and MPA management, and provide a platform to promote wider environmental awareness for sustainable development and ecological stewardship in Zanzibar.”

“We booked a room and got a household. By the second morning the kitchen knew how we took our coffee and had opinions about where we should walk.”

“The building would have been enough. What we did not expect was how much of the day the staff quietly built around what we said at breakfast.”

“Everything was arranged before we asked, and nothing felt arranged. That is a hard thing to get right and they get it right.”
