Walk the Path of the Monks at Diskit Monastery

Walk the Path of the Monks at Diskit Monastery

When you visit Diskit Monastery, you're not just seeing a place of worship but also witnessing a living tradition. Located high above the Nubra Valley, this 14th-century gompa or monastery offers you wide views of the Shyok River and the stark Karakoram mountains.

The climb up stone steps is steady and the reward is clear: a quiet, powerful space where time feels slower.

This visit provides you with peace through its wonderful surroundings and rich traditions. The calm presence of monks, the sound of chants and the simplicity of the space help you slow down, reflect and reconnect with yourself and the present moment, away from the distractions of everyday life.

You’ll hear the hum of prayers, the deep notes of horns and the clink of cymbals as monks go about their day. Inside, the prayer hall is simple and filled with meaning. Walk around the large Buddha statue, spin the prayer wheel and take in the smell of butter lamps and incense.

In the monks’ quarters, daily life unfolds quietly – meals are prepared using traditional methods and students chant texts handed down for ages.

Outside, walk through the village lanes lined with mani walls and white chortens. Every turn adds to the story. You’ll see how this community balances old ways and modern needs.

If you visit during a festival like Losar, the monastery comes alive with masked dances and rituals that locals and visitors both attend.

A visit to the Diskit Monastery is all about understanding how faith shapes daily life, how silence can say a lot and how high-altitude communities keep their culture strong.

Spend time here and you’ll come away with more than photos and carry a better sense of what it means to live with intention and connection.

Ride a Bactrian Camel in the Cold Desert of Ladakh

Ride a Bactrian Camel in the Cold Desert of Ladakh

A Bactrian camel ride in Hunder lets you step into a slower pace of travel and see the desert from a different perspective. These unique, double-humped camels, once used by traders along the Silk Route, are well-adapted to Ladakh’s cold desert climate.

With their thick coats and sturdy build, they carry you steadily across the dunes, offering a ride that’s both calm and thrilling.

As you settle into the saddle and sway with each step, the vastness of Hunder’s cold desert begins to unfold. The landscape is stark yet striking – golden dunes ringed by snow-capped mountains, creating a contrast you don’t often find.

The silence of the desert is only broken by the crunch of hooves and the occasional call of the camel.

Locals in the region have revived this ancient way of travel as a sustainable tourism experience. It offers them income, while giving you a direct link to Ladakh’s history.

Traders, monks and nomads once followed this path in search of trade, meaning and adventure. Riding through it now, you’ll sense their presence, not in a dramatic way, but as a quiet echo under the sun.

The sun feels warm on your skin, but the wind reminds you you're high in the mountains. As you rise and fall with the camel’s pace, the vast dunes stretch around you.

The camel’s coarse fur brushes your legs as it moves with a rhythmic gait. Each step causes a soft creak of leather and a slight shift in balance.

The camel ride is short but memorable. It grounds you in the present and connects you to the past. It surely makes you feel a little lighter and free.
