Spend Time at the National Elk Refuge

Spend Time at the National Elk Refuge

During the winter, the National Elk Refuge becomes a focal point for elk watching as thousands of these majestic animals migrate to the area. The highlight of a winter visit is the sleigh ride tour, which takes you directly into the heart of the elk herd.

These tours provide a unique opportunity to see the elk up close, observe their behaviour and learn about their habitat and conservation efforts from guides. The sight of these large herds, sometimes numbering in the thousands, is beautiful.

For photographers, the National Elk Refuge is a paradise. The winter landscape, combined with the abundance of elk, offers countless opportunities for capturing stunning images.

Whether you’re an amateur with a smartphone or a professional with advanced gear, the refuge provides the perfect setting for wildlife photography.

In addition to elk, the refuge is home to other wildlife species. You might see bison, wolves, coyotes and various bird species, including bald eagles and trumpeter swans. The diversity of wildlife makes every visit unique, as you never know what you might encounter.

Beyond the sleigh rides, the refuge has a visitor centre that provides educational exhibits about the elk and other wildlife. Here, you can learn about the history of the refuge, the challenges of wildlife management and the importance of preserving these natural habitats. The centre also offers information on seasonal activities and the best times for wildlife viewing.

In the warmer months, the refuge offers different experiences. While the elk migrate to higher elevations, you can still enjoy the scenic beauty of the area through hiking and birdwatching.

The landscape transforms with the changing seasons, offering a different but equally exciting experience.

Visiting the National Elk Refuge from Anvil Hotel & Cache House surely combines adventure and education.
