Where the mountains meet the sea - Relaxation after the trek
Golden and white sands fringe the Atlantic along Sierra Leone’s Western Peninsula. From Lumley Beach on the edge of Freetown to the Banana Islands, beach loving locals and visitors adore the laidback tropical lifestyle they encounter here.
After long days trekking and feet released from the hiking boots, I enjoyed stepping onto the cool sand and luke warm waves of the Atlantic Ocean. From Lumley Beach and its white sands fringed by cool cafés, bars and eateries, hotels and swaying palms to the charming and historical fishing village of York where we see remnants of freed slaves who settled here. Sierra Leone's long coastline and abundant wildlife is spectacular. Nature lovers will equally delight during whale season when migrating humpback whales and dolphins settle in adjacent Whale Bay. We spend our last evening enjoying a soul-stirring sunset with a refreshing sun downers and the catch of the day before heading home the next day. What a finish to an epic, transformational journey.
