Hoy Sala ” ( Strike Sala ! ) said the guru Sudatta Muni to his student, Sala when a "tiger" attacked them. The student struck the animal in one blow, and the guru was so pleased that he asked Sala to establish a kingdom - the Hoysala dynasty.. The folklore however became so popular that almost every temple of the Hoysalas has this story carved in stone and it became the royal emblem of the dynasty.. And you can see this in the iconic Chennakesava Temple in Belur, built in the 12 th -13th centuries. Belur or Velapuri as it was called was one of the capitals of the Hoysala Dynasty and the temple was built here by one of the famous kings - Bittideva or Vishnuvardhan and it took over 100 years to be completed. Every inch of the temple is sheer poetry in stone and cannot be missed.
